With a reflective anklet or vest, you’re probably sufficiently protected, but you can’t really overdo it if you’re concerned about being visible to motorists. With that in mind, we also tested reflective running gear in numerous categories, including hats, jackets, shirts, tights, socks, and laces. Generally speaking, shirts and jackets constructed with reflective materials—usually on the seams or in the form of reflective accents—did not catch our test driver’s eye as much as products that had reflective zones that were larger, positioned low on the body, or worn on moving extremities. In addition, many of the products were less versatile pieces useful only in certain weather conditions, or items like shirts and socks, which require a wash after every use. —Peter Flax
