Gear for Foul-Weather Bike Commuting

Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night should keep you off your bike, right? But even if sleet and ice don’t usually figure into your commute, distracted drivers on rainy, dark, pre-dawn and post-dusk roads can be daunting to any rider—and a source of worry for their loved ones. That’s why I asked my parents for a Proviz Reflect360 cycling jacket a few Christmases back. It’s waterproof and well ventilated, but more important, the whole thing lights up like Liberace when the faintest ray of light catches it. In daylight, the color is a sedate gray. At night, cruising through intersections, more than once I’ve spotted a driver stopped at a traffic light with a stare on their face that read, “What is that thing?” Made you look, I think to myself … which is the whole point.
